What listeners will find here
A rare look at the woman who helped sell British fascism before Cable Street
This episode explores Anne Brock-Griggs, a prominent female organiser in the British Union of Fascists, and her role in the years leading to Cable Street. Jen Baldwin and Beth Gaskell use family records, newspapers and political archives to examine why fascism appealed to some Britons and how those beliefs met fierce local resistance.
How Cable Street lived on through one woman’s lifelong fight to remember
The Battle of Cable Street is explored through Minnie Keeping, a young East London anti-fascist whose experience on 4 October 1936 shaped the rest of her life. Jen Baldwin and British Library curator Beth Gaskell follow her path from protester to guardian of the event’s memory.
Three brothers, one East End flashpoint, and the road to Cable Street
The episode follows the Jacobvitch family as a planned fascist march pushes East London to breaking point in October 1936. Jen Baldwin and Beth Gaskell trace how three brothers from a Jewish hairdressing family ended the day under arrest amid one of modern British history’s most famous confrontations.
Cable Street through the lives caught between resistance and fascism
The Battle of Cable Street comes into focus through the people swept up in it. Jen Baldwin and Beth Gaskell explore East London’s stand against fascism via Jewish brothers arrested in the chaos, a lifelong activist, and a woman helping build fascist support.
Industrial Revolution family history questions answered in Ironbridge Gorge
Researching ancestors at the heart of the Industrial Revolution is the focus of this bonus episode. Jen Baldwin and producer Ellie Ayton tackle listener questions, with a particular eye on Ironbridge Gorge, oral history, and the stories families carry across generations.
