What listeners will find here
Wisdom Means Avoiding What Pulls You Toward Sin
This episode centers on Sirach’s warning to avoid the places and patterns that lead into sin. Fr. Mike also reflects on how Proverbs and Sirach offer practical guidance toward wisdom, even when their advice does not fit every situation perfectly.
Zeal, mercy, and wise friendship in Mattathias’ turning point
This episode centers on Mattathias’ violent stand in 1 Maccabees 2 and what that zeal means in context. It also turns to Sirach’s practical wisdom on caring for the poor and choosing friends carefully, alongside Proverbs on humility and honor.
Persecution, desecration, and wisdom for enduring trials
This episode turns to 1 Maccabees with the persecution of the Jews and Antiochus Epiphanes’ desecration of the Temple. It also opens Sirach with reflections on fearing the Lord, staying close to God in suffering, and honoring parents.
Greek oppression, Hanukkah, and the courage at the heart of the Maccabean Revolt
The Maccabean Revolt takes center stage as Jeff Cavins and Fr. Mike introduce a biblical period spanning Greek oppression under Antiochus Epiphanes to Herodian rule. The episode sketches the major events, the Maccabees’ zealous resistance, and the martyrdoms that shaped Jewish religious identity.
Nehemiah’s hard ending and a searching look at love, obedience, and compromise
Nehemiah 13 and Malachi 1–4 bring the story to a sobering close as Israel falls back into unfaithfulness. Fr. Mike uses that ending to examine a familiar spiritual mistake: treating God’s endless love as permission to prefer our own desires over his commandments.
