What listeners will find here
Why Rubber Soul marked The Beatles’ break from their early image
The episode explores how Rubber Soul became a turning point for The Beatles in 1965. Giles Martin joins Robin Hilton to discuss the album’s changing sound, its "reasonably bleak" mood, and the new mixes, demos, and outtakes in the super deluxe release.
A loud, left-turning week in new music led by Phoebe Bridgers and Gilla Band
This episode rounds up standout new songs from Phoebe Bridgers, Gilla Band, Trentemøller, Wednesday, serpentwithfeet and Lily Konigsberg. Robin Hilton and Dora Levite lean into a bigger, noisier set of picks, from soundtrack surprise drops to disjointed rock and widescreen shoegaze.
From Lizzy McAlpine to Bach: a wide-ranging set of standout new songs
This episode surveys a week of notable new music, moving from Sen Morimoto’s laid-back grooves and Lizzy McAlpine’s ode to her late father to Víkingur Ólafsson’s take on Bach. It’s a broad, mood-shifting mix that also spotlights Beth Taylor, untitled (halo) and inti figgis-vizueta.
Six standout new songs, from M83’s cosmic sweep to Asher White’s sly funk
This episode surveys a fresh batch of new music, led by M83’s “Blister Sunrise,” Shygirl’s “Alyse,” and collaborations from FKJ and Labrinth. Robin Hilton and Sheldon Pearce move through six tracks that span euphoric pop, subversive funk, and more adventurous corners of the current release slate.
When a cover doesn’t just work — it might outshine the original
Cover songs take center stage as Robin Hilton, Dora Levite and Lars Gotrich swap more versions they think rival or surpass the originals. The picks range from Janis Joplin and Nico to Tricky, Phoebe Bridgers and a reggae spin on a Beatles classic.
